The banding inside this carnelian is what makes it different from any other bead of its type. Viewed through the polished face, the internal structure of the stone resolves into flowing horizontal waves — lighter orange-gold lines undulating through a deeper wine-red field, the layers laid down in the carnelian's formation and now visible through the translucent material exactly as they were when the bead was first ground and polished. No two faces read the same internal pattern. On one long face the waves are tight and regular; on another, broad rounded inclusion zones float in the interior like dark islands in an orange field. The condition of the body faces is intact and smooth. Both drill holes are present and round. The damage this bead carries is concentrated at its two ends — significant ancient chipping at one end and lesser chipping at the other — all documented in the photographs and fully disclosed.
The form is consistent with Indus Valley bead-making tradition: a rectangular cross-section with beveled edges running the full length, creating an eight-sided long profile that replaces four sharp corners with four angled facets. This technique was one of the defining characteristics of the ancient hardstone bead workshops of the Indus Valley region, producing forms that were traded widely across the ancient world and continued to be made in the same region across many centuries. The slight natural taper — 9.9mm at one end, 9.4mm at the other — is an inherent characteristic of this piece.
The significant chipping at the more damaged end is shown in images 6 and 8 — a substantial fracture area to one side of the drill hole, with multiple broken surfaces that carry the same warm patina as the rest of the bead, confirming the damage is ancient. The drill hole at that end is intact and round. The lesser-chipped end (image 7) shows smaller-scale ancient fracturing around the drill opening, also patinated and intact. The body — all four long faces and their beveled edges — is undamaged.
This bead was sourced in Nepal and, along with Ac-071026-CBEV, came from the same original necklace, demonstrating that these beveled rectangular carnelian forms were strung together in the regional tradition from which they were recovered.
The Beveled Carnelian Bead Tradition
The production of rectangular carnelian beads with beveled edges was one of the highest craft achievements of the ancient Indus Valley bead-making centres. Carnelian was prized across the ancient world for its translucency, its warm orange-red colour, and its hardness — a material that required skilled grinding and drilling to work. Beveled-edge rectangular beads from the Indus Valley tradition have been found in archaeological contexts from the Persian Gulf to Mesopotamia, where they reached as trade goods from the Indian subcontinent. The form was produced over many centuries, making precise dating difficult; what the beveled rectangular form reliably indicates is membership in one of the ancient world's most developed lapidary traditions.
