Most dzi read dark ground with cream motif. This one reads the other way.

The cream zones on this bead are broader than the dark zones — the cap's scroll-bracket elements and hexagonal star form are cut out of a cream-dominant field rather than drawn onto a dark one, and the dark brown lines that define them are secondary to the surrounding cream. It is the same Dharma Cap motif, on the same two faces, in the same two-face layout that appears on younger pieces of this type. But at 500 to 800 years, the surface has aged into something those younger pieces do not carry: the cream zones show age-consistent surface crystallisation throughout — a fine, granular matte texture that develops as the agate's mineral structure slowly reorders itself over centuries. At macro scale, documented in images 7, 8, and 9, this crystallisation is unmistakable. It reads not as damage but as time made visible in the stone.

Face A carries the decorative panel composition: a scroll-bracket element at each end of the face flanking a central hexagonal star form, the whole framed by the cream field that dominates the face. Face B carries the cap's structural silhouette: three dome/arch forms across the upper register, with a bordered lower panel below — the lotus-crown hat read as outline, the form completing across the full face. Each face presents a different register of the same motif, and the composition only resolves when both have been seen.

The dark zones throughout show the rough, pitted micro-surface consistent with this age range. The end caps at both drill ends are warm brown — distinctly warmer and darker than the cream body — forming a clear two-zone transition confirmed in all four flat-lit lateral photographs and both angled end views. Both drill holes are small and clean with no chipping at the rim. No cracks and no chips are visible in any photo, including the macro shots. I independently confirm both.

A UV test video is included. Under ultraviolet light the bead's surface shows an even, age-consistent matte response with no fluorescence in the ground zones — the expected result for genuine ancient agate, inconsistent with modern synthetic materials or resin coatings. This bead shares its crafting tradition with Ac-071026-7E, the ancient seven eye in the collection, also UV verified.

Guru Rinpoche's Dharma Cap Motif

Padmasambhava — Guru Rinpoche — is revered across all schools of Tibetan Buddhism as the Second Buddha, the master who established the Vajrayana teachings in Tibet in the eighth century. His distinctive lotus-crown hat, the Dharma Cap, is one of the most recognised emblems of his identity — an expression of his enlightened wisdom and his spiritual authority over the teachings he transmitted. A dzi bead carrying this motif is understood in Tibetan tradition as a vessel for Guru Rinpoche's blessing and protection, a direct invocation of his presence worn close to the body. On this bead the cap's form is distributed across two faces — the decorative panel on one, the structural silhouette on the other — so that the complete image of the hat only emerges through rotation.
