Nine eyes distribute themselves across this bead's two long faces — four on one, five on the other — their cream-white rings reading cleanly against the deep black ground. The rings are well-defined, each framing a dark center, with the characteristic gentle blending at the ring edges where the etched motif has integrated into the agate over centuries of age. The connecting maze-line network flows between the eyes on both faces: a system of cream lines moving horizontally and vertically across the black, linking the eyes into a continuous composition. No two faces are identical in their arrangement, and the maze-line paths differ between faces — the craftsman's freehand movement evident in the slight variations in line weight and direction.

The ground is deep black through the central body — a genuine pitch-black agate ground consistent with ancient Tibetan etching technique. At both drill ends the stone opens into warm honey-brown: the agate's natural end-cap zone, translucent and distinctly warmer than the body black, visible in both angled end photographs. This two-tone character — black body, brown ends — is one of the most reliable visual markers of an ancient bead whose coloring has developed naturally within the stone rather than being applied to the surface.

What distinguishes this bead within the nine-eye category is its bloodspot patina. Across the white raised lines and pooling in the concave zones of the patterning, a warm reddish-brown mineral toning has developed — iron-oxide compounds migrating through the agate's crystal structure over five to eight centuries, producing the coloring that collectors call bloodspot or cinnabar spot. It is visible in the macro photographs: concentrated at the junctions between the cream lines and the black ground, and within the eye rings themselves. This depth of mineral development cannot be replicated artificially, and its presence here is consistent with the bead's age estimate of 500 to 800 years.

Surface condition is excellent for a piece of this age. The motif lines are intact throughout, with no erosion or degradation. No cracks or chips are present on any face or at either drill hole. Both drill holes are small and clean, set within the warm honey-brown end cap zones, with no rim damage. The surface carries a natural polish from centuries of handling.

The Nine-Eye Dzi

Nine is among the most powerful numbers in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology. A nine-eye dzi is traditionally associated with the nine planets, the accumulation of merit across nine realms, and the clearing of obstacles in all directions.
