This ancient Tibetan two-eye dzi carries one etched eye and one naturally formed eye — a rare configuration where the craftsman recognised an existing eye-like formation in the stone's own banding and chose to complete the bead around it rather than etch both motifs from scratch. The naturally formed eye occupies one face of the barrel: a broad, organic pale zone with a soft-edged brown pupil at its centre, shaped entirely by the agate's internal banding rather than by any applied tool. The etched eye on the opposing face is more structured — a clearly defined oval composition with a distinct pupil and iris — but both read unmistakably as eyes, and both face outward with equal presence.

The bead's colour is unlike anything else in the collection. The ground shifts across the body from deep dark brown to warm black, while the drill ends glow a rich reddish-terracotta — the agate's own internal warmth coming through at the stone's thinnest points. The pale zones of both eyes carry a luminous quality, the natural white of the agate contrasting with the warm dark surrounding ground. At the 90-degree turn faces, both eye compositions disappear entirely, replaced by the flowing diagonal banding of the raw agate — dark brown, terracotta, and cream striations moving across the surface without any etched intervention.

The macro photography reveals extensive surface crystallisation across the eye zones — the original polish replaced by a fine, mineral texture that develops within the stone over centuries. This is a consistent and positive indicator of genuine age, and at the estimated 500–800 year range it is exactly what one would expect to see. Light bloodspot inclusions are present, documented from the macro images. The surface overall carries a deep, warm gloss on the darker zones — the original polish partially retained — with the crystallised eye zones providing textural contrast.

At 28.8×11.7mm this bead is compact and wide-bodied, with a cushion-like rectangular profile quite distinct from the elongated fusiform barrels that dominate the collection. The form itself is characteristic of older Tibetan agate working traditions. No cracks are present; confirmed independently from photos.

The Two Eye Motif

The two-eye dzi is one of the foundational motifs in the Tibetan bead tradition, associated with the union of compassion and wisdom, and with the harmonious balance of dual forces in the wearer's life. The eyes are held to open the wearer to clarity and discernment, offering protection and the alignment of inner and outer perception. A bead where one eye is etched and one naturally formed adds a further dimension — the stone itself is understood to have participated in the motif's creation, lending a quality of inherent, unrepeatable authenticity.
