The focal bead on this bracelet is the reason it exists. An antique Tibetan Green Tara dzi, 200+ years old, with a pitch-black agate ground, bold white motif lines, and a rose-amber bloodspot zone that is visible to the naked eye and fully documented under microscope magnification — a concentration of natural cinnabar inclusions sitting within the white motif zone as a warm rosy-peach cloud composed of innumerable fine reddish-brown points. Around it: fourteen white bodhi root rounds in warm ivory-white, each separated from the next by a gold-tone rondelle spacer. The bracelet is strung on elastic stretch cord and sold as a complete piece.
The composition was built to let the focal bead read clearly. White bodhi root is among the most traditionally appropriate materials for pairing with a Green Tara dzi — its pale, matte surface draws no attention to itself and allows the pitch-black and white of the dzi to stand in full contrast. The gold-tone spacers add a measured warmth at regular intervals, linking the bodhi root rounds without overpowering them. Viewed flat (image 6), the gold-cream-gold cadence around the circumference is even and deliberate. Viewed from the side (images 2 and 3), the focal bead sits proud of the surrounding beads by virtue of its length — 37.1mm — and anchors the bracelet visually at every angle.
The bloodspot zone on the focal bead is documented in two photographs: image 4 shows it at bracelet scale as a warm rose-peach inclusion within the white motif zone, and image 5 shows it under high magnification — the rose-amber field resolves into hundreds of very fine reddish-brown cinnabar dots distributed across the zone in a dense, pervasive constellation. These are natural mineral inclusions (cinnabar, 硃砂/zhusha, mercuric sulfide) that formed within the agate over the bead's lifetime. They are not applied; they cannot be replicated.
The bodhi root beads carry their own significance within the Tibetan tradition. Bodhi root (菩提根, pútí gēn) is the root of the sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) — the tree beneath which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. Bodhi root beads are widely used in Tibetan prayer malas and jewellery as a material considered conducive to meditative focus and spiritual practice. Paired with a Green Tara dzi, the white bodhi root complement beads reinforce the bracelet's overall character as a devotional object in the Tibetan tradition.
The Green Tara Motif
Green Tara (綠度母, Lǜ Dùmǔ) is one of the most revered bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism — understood as the embodiment of enlightened activity, swift compassion, and protection from fear and obstacles. She is depicted in a posture of readiness, one foot extended as if to rise immediately to the aid of those who call on her. A Green Tara dzi bead carries the energy of her protection and is traditionally considered a powerful amulet for removing obstacles, granting fearlessness, and supporting swift action in the face of difficulty. The Green Tara is among the most actively petitioned figures in Tibetan devotional practice.
