Lotus Bud Motif with Bloodspots, 43.1×12.5mm, Very Dark Brown Agate (At-072226-LBBS)

🪨 Genuine agate. Unretouched photos. What you see is what ships.

The macro photograph on this bead shows something unusual — not scattered dots, but a continuous orange band running along the boundary between the cream and dark zones, the cinnabar concentrated at the exact line where the two colours meet.

This antique dzi carries the Lotus Bud motif: a rounded arch at the top of the primary face, with curving organic lines sweeping outward and downward in the form of a closed bud before it opens. The composition has a distinctly different character from the more geometric eye or stripe motifs — the lines flow rather than resolve, the cream elements reading as petals or sepals gathered around the central body of an unopened flower. The reverse face and transitional views disperse the motif into its component elements: broader cream zones with dark brown patches distributed across the field, the bud's unity fragmenting into a more scattered reading from those angles before resolving again into the bud form at the primary face.

The ground throughout is a very dark brown — confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photographs and as specified by the owner. The warmth in the dark zones is consistent across all four body shots — a rich, deep brown rather than the cooler neutrality of a black ground. The cream and white motif lines stand against this dark brown in clear contrast, with warm orange tones appearing at the boundaries between the two zones — colouration that the macro photograph reveals as cinnabar saturation concentrated along those boundary lines. Both end caps carry a warm orange-brown tone at the drill tips, and the drill openings themselves show a vivid warm orange — a characteristic of this piece's coloration at the drill zones that is noted in the material field below.

The surface carries a mature, slightly matte character — the polish is present but has settled over one to three centuries into a surface that reads as fully aged rather than freshly worked. Fine age-consistent texture is visible in the macro shot across the dark zones. No chips or cracks observed from available photos.

The Lotus Bud Motif

The lotus is among the most universal symbols in Buddhist iconography — the flower that rises through murky water to bloom immaculate above the surface, representing the potential for enlightenment within the conditions of ordinary existence. The lotus bud specifically carries the meaning of that potential at the moment before it is fully realised: the awakening that has already begun but has not yet opened completely. In Tibetan tradition the lotus is associated with Avalokiteshvara — the bodhisattva of compassion — and with the purity of intention that precedes and enables all virtuous action. On a dzi bead, the lotus bud motif is understood to represent the wearer's own awakening nature: present, unfolding, and moving toward full expression.

Bloodspots — Cinnabar Inclusions

Bloodspots on dzi beads are inclusions of cinnabar (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide), a reddish-orange mineral that forms within the agate over centuries, considered in the Tibetan tradition as a marker of age, authenticity, and accumulated blessing. On this bead the macro photograph documents the cinnabar in a distinctive distribution: a near-continuous warm orange band concentrated along the boundary zones between the cream motif lines and the dark ground, with warm scattered colouration in the adjacent cream areas. Distribution: boundary-concentrated along cream-to-dark zone boundaries.
