The warm gold at the centre of this bead is not paint, not pigment, and not etching — it is the stone itself, and it has been sitting there for two to three centuries.

Most dzi beads carry their motif on the surface, applied by hand through an ancient etching process. This one carries its motif inside — a naturally-formed concentric oval of warm beige-gold, centred on a glowing warm orange core, framed by ring after ring of cool blue-grey banding that radiates outward to the very dark tips of both ends. The composition is not painted on and cannot be worn away. It is the internal structure of the stone.

The blue-grey is the dominant colour of this bead — a cool, slightly silvery tone that runs through the majority of the banding and gives the bead its overall character. Against it, the warm gold zone reads as the centre of something: a concentrated warmth surrounded by cool, the way a lit window reads against a dark wall. Rotate the bead and the composition shifts. On the primary face, the eye is clearly resolved — the warm oval with its orange centre sits within converging arcs of blue-grey. Turn to the opposite face and the banding runs more parallel, the eye partially releasing into a landscape of flowing colour. Turn further and the cream and white bands come forward; the warm zone recedes. Each rotation is a different version of the same stone.

The overall banding of this antique agate is exceptional in its detail — the individual layers are fine and close-spaced, running in smooth parallel curves through the blue-grey zones and converging more dramatically where the warm central band crosses them. At 59.3mm, this is one of the longer antique naturally-formed barrels in the collection, and the length allows the full range of banding to be read across the body. The drill ends are clean; one very minor surface character is noted at the margin of one drill opening but causes no structural concern. No chips or cracks are observed.

The One Eye Motif

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the one eye dzi (གཅིག་མིག, chig mig) carries the energy of Mahakala and the all-seeing wisdom eye — the capacity to perceive without obstruction. A naturally-formed one eye bead, where the motif emerges from the stone's own internal structure rather than from the craftsman's hand, holds a particular place within Tibetan understanding: the stone is considered to have formed with this intention already within it. Whether appreciated for its extraordinary natural aesthetics or held as a spiritual object, a naturally-formed one eye antique dzi bead is among the more unusual pieces the tradition produces — and this example, with its rare blue-grey ground and warm gold centre, is one of the most visually distinctive in this collection.
