Turn this bead to any face and the white lines resolve into a different composition — the ruyi never repeats itself.

This antique Tibetan ruyi dzi carries one of the most fluid and asymmetric motifs in the dzi tradition. The ruyi lines — bright, cool white curves scrolling and sweeping across a deep black ground — arrange themselves differently on each of the bead's four rotational faces. No two views present the same configuration. On one face a broad arc sweeps upward with a curling terminal; on another, two interlocking curves chase each other across the field; at the 90-degree turns, the composition reduces to single sweeping lines before expanding again on the opposing face. The bead has to be turned slowly and completely to be understood — and even then, the arrangement shifts with the light.

The ground is a deep, uniform black — the darkest body ground of any piece in this session's antique group — and the ruyi lines read against it with luminous cool-white clarity. A thin warm honey-orange stripe of natural agate banding runs horizontally through the body, visible from certain angles as an internal colour seam rather than an etched element. The drill end caps warm to a rich dark brown consistent with the agate's natural internal palette, confirmed by fine parallel banding striations visible in macro photography.

The macro photography also documents a generous population of cinnabar bloodspots —硃砂 (zhusha, mercuric sulfide) — distributed as individual reddish-brown micro-dots scattered across the white ruyi zones, with denser concentration in the lower portions of the larger cream fields. The dots are small and individually resolved, visible clearly under macro magnification, and consistent in coloration across all three macro images. The black ground zones are clean and free of surface inclusions. The bead's surface carries a deep, warm gloss — the original polish retained in excellent condition across both the black and white zones. No cracks are present; confirmed independently from photos.

At 37.9mm this is a compact antique barrel with a slightly asymmetric taper — one end drawn slightly more pointed than the other — giving the bead a character that is subtly hand-formed rather than mechanically uniform, consistent with its estimated 300–500 year age.

The Ruyi Motif

The ruyi (如意) is one of the most auspicious symbols in East Asian and Tibetan material culture, taking its form from the ceremonial ruyi sceptre — a curved, cloud-headed implement historically carried by scholars, nobles, and high Buddhist officials as a symbol of authority and the fulfilment of wishes. On a dzi bead, the ruyi motif distils this symbolism into a flowing curved line that trails and scrolls across the ground — carrying associations of wish-fulfilment, good fortune, and the graceful realisation of one's intentions. A ruyi dzi with cinnabar bloodspots represents a convergence of two significant dzi properties: the motif's wish-granting symbolism and the bloodspots' long-recognised association with vitality and spiritual potency.
