Each face of this bead carries three diamonds — and the six together form a composition that does not repeat from any two angles.

The Diamond Spear motif distributes its elements across the full circumference of the bead rather than concentrating them on a single face. Three cream-outlined diamond forms run across Face A, three more across Face B, and the interplay between them — visible as the bead is turned — creates a continuous lattice of intersecting cream lines and warm brown ground zones that reads differently from each quarter rotation. From directly above, two diamonds are visible at either side of the bead's axis with a third centred below them. Turn to the side and the diamonds shift register, the cream lines now reading as a connected chain rather than isolated forms. The composition is designed to move.

The ground of this bead is warm medium brown — a tone that varies subtly from end to end, slightly warmer and lighter through the central body and settling into a somewhat deeper warm brown toward the drill ends. This tonal variation is an inherent character of the agate rather than an applied effect, and it gives the bead a quiet depth that a single-tone ground does not have. The cream motif lines are crisp and well-preserved across all photographed angles, retaining their contrast against the warm ground without the age erosion that affects older pieces in this motif family. Light cinnabar inclusions are present within the stone — visible as a warm tinge in the cream zones — consistent with the agate's age but not of a density that makes them a defining visual feature of this piece.

At 33.0×11.5mm this is a compact bead in the Six Eye Diamond Spear tradition — proportionally slender relative to its length, and the motif scales well to the smaller format without appearing crowded. Both drill ends show warm honey-toned translucent agate at the drill channel. No chips or cracks are observed independently.

The Six Eye Diamond Spear Motif

The Diamond Spear (sometimes called Diamond Eye or Diamond Lattice in collector traditions) is one of the more geometrically precise motifs in the Tibetan dzi repertoire. The six diamond forms — three per face — are each understood as an eye, combining the protective power of the eye motif with the sharp, penetrating quality of the diamond shape. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the diamond (Vajra, རྡོ་རྗེ) represents indestructibility, clarity, and the power to cut through illusion — qualities that align with the six-eye tradition's associations with multi-directional perception and protection. A bead carrying six such forms is understood to extend these protective qualities simultaneously in all directions. This particular motif is relatively uncommon in surviving antique collections, and this piece joins one other Six Eye Diamond Spear in this collection.
