Seven eyes distribute across this bead's four long faces in an uneven arrangement that rewards careful study. No two faces carry the same composition. One face shows three eyes stacked in a vertical column — one in the upper register, one at centre, one below — connected by S-curve wave lines that flow between them in a continuous cream-white network. A second face carries two eyes side by side at the centre, framed above and below by angular bracket elements whose lines arch over the pair in a tent or gateway form. A third face shows two eyes with large scroll-curve connectors extending outward from each ring, the cream lines moving freely across the dark ground. The fourth face presents a further variation: two eyes again, but the framing elements here are more geometric, the bracket lines harder and more angular. The craftsman worked each face differently, and the full character of this bead only becomes clear after all four have been seen.

The ground throughout is a deep dark brown-black — not the pure pitch-black of some dzi, but a genuinely dark warm brown that deepens toward black in the body zones, consistent with the natural agate character of an antique Tibetan bead of this age. The cream-white motif lines read in strong contrast against this ground, well-defined across all faces with no erosion or degradation of the patterning. At both drill ends the stone opens into a distinctly warmer and lighter brown — the natural end cap zone visible in both angled photographs — forming the characteristic two-tone colour transition of an antique bead whose coloring has developed organically within the agate over centuries.

Surface condition is excellent for a piece of this age. The motif lines are intact throughout. No cracks or chips are present on any face or at either drill hole. Both drill holes are small and clean, set within the warm brown end cap zones, with no rim damage. The surface carries a natural polish from centuries of handling.

The Seven-Eye Dzi

Seven is among the most auspicious numbers in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology, associated with the seven branches of enlightenment, the seven precious substances, and the seven weeks following the Buddha's awakening. A seven-eye dzi is traditionally understood as a bead of exceptional fortune — capable of attracting wealth and prosperity, removing the seven types of suffering, and conferring the seven royal possessions upon the wearer. In Tibetan tradition, seven-eye dzi beads have long been regarded as among the most powerful of all dzi types, sought by practitioners, collectors, and those seeking both spiritual protection and material blessing.
